Mulch
Mulch is a protective cover placed over the soil to retain moisture, reduce erosion, provide nutrients and suppress weed growth and germination.
To increase your plant's chances of survival add a 2-3 inch layer of mulch to insulate their roots and prevent them from freezing in the winter.
During the summer mulch conserves moisture, reducing the need for frequent waterings and maintains a more even soil temperature. As mulch slowly decomposes, it provides organic matter which helps keep the soil loose. This improves root growth, increases infiltration of water, and also improves the water holding capacity of the soil.
