We can't emphasize enough the importance of mulch. Add a 2-3 inch layer of mulch to your flower beds, trees, shrubs and containers. The mulch conserves moisture, reducing the need for frequent waterings and maintains a more even soil temperature. It will also prevent weed growth as well as providing a finished look to your garden. As mulch slowly decomposes, it provides organic matter which helps keep the soil loose. This improves root growth, increases infiltration of water, and also improves the water holding capacity of the soil.
